The Derby Day embodied CoolPlay’s mission of using sport for youth development, celebrating teamwork, communication, respect, and maintaining composure under pressure.

CoolPlay Champions led an activation session where learners explored strategies for maintaining composure on and off the field. These lessons came alive during matches as young athletes demonstrated remarkable poise, consistently supporting teammates and respecting opponents even in high-pressure moments.

“I truly enjoyed the day. No matter the weather and delays, all things were made possible,” said Mr May from Heathfield Primary. “Seeing the enthusiasm from the kids—they learned values through sport, which helped them appreciate the game and reflect on how to carry themselves both on and off the field.”

Community Connection

Despite challenging weather, parents, educators, and supporters turned out to cheer on the young athletes, creating an atmosphere of joy and inclusion. CoolPlay Champions led warm-ups, facilitated reflections, and helped learners transform their experiences into life lessons.

“What an amazing experience for the Zonnebloem girls!” said Champion Tammy Madell. “Despite the rainy start, they gave their all and showcased hidden talents. It was about confidence, teamwork, and having fun. And they brought home the win! This was a real CoolPlay moment—proof that it’s not just about winning, but about the experience and joy of the game.”
